An Alternative to Wrapping Paper (Part 2)
Wednesday I shared how I have enough wrapping paper to last until the end of time. Â If you missed Part 1 you can read it here.
Since I would rather cancel Christmas than use that same wrapping paper again, I decided that I better find an alternative.  I’ve decided to go green and wrap my gifts in newsprint.
I’m pleased with how my gifts look, but I am trying to mentally prepare myself for endlessly being made fun of by my family.  😉

Have you ever use green gift wrapping? Â (And I don’t just mean regular green colored wrapping paper!)
I have – when boxes are too big for any wrapping paper I have on hand – I used newspaper. I try to pick the pages for the individual – for example, Caleb’s brithday present was wrapped in the sports pages.
Kathleen, I love the idea of picking out a section of the paper just perfect for the birthday boy! With my Christmas gifts, I’m just making sure that there isn’t any colored print on the pages that I use. That way it has a more classic black & white look. However, I also have saved the comics for gift wrapping.
John’s family does the same thing-they use newspaper. They like it b/c it flies well when balled up and hurled across the room to an unexpecting bystander!!
Lisa, I guess I’ll have to wear protective head gear when you open your gift this year!
I actually love newsprint with a big old bow. I think it looks super cute! Thanks for linking to my wrapping paper bow tutorial! 🙂
Amanda, thanks for stopping by! I made one of your bows and it turned out great!
For my daughter’s 1st birthday, I took apart a toy magazine and used the doll pages to wrap her baby doll box. It turned out even better than I hoped.
Coquetta, how sweet is THAT?!?! 🙂 The only down side to using smaller pages like that or newspaper is that I miss the size of the huge roll. Sometimes you have to layer several pages to make it work. I think it is worth it though.
You can also turn the wrapping paper you already have over to the plain side and then you can decorate it however you want, sometimes the printed side shows through a little, but often it doesn’t or it adds to a cool abstract look within whatever you decorate with. The glossier finish of most wrapping paper is also great for finger painting to decorate it.
Alyson, thanks for sharing your great ideas! I especially love using it for finger paint.
