How to Find Safe Products – GoodGuide.com

Avoiding toxic chemicals in our personal products, cleaning products and food can be overwhelming.  Should I be buying things that are only labeled organic or is my regular stuff not so bad after all?

I found an awesome website that makes the whole process of using green products so much easier:  GoodGuide.com

Good Guide’s motto is, “Finding healthy, green, ethical products according to scientific ratings.”  And that is exactly what they do!

When using Good Guide, you can browse their extensive list of products and see how they rate in 3 different areas:

  1. Health – Is this product safe for my body?  Are there toxic ingredients?
  2. Environment – What impact does this company leave on the Earth?
  3. Society – How well does this company treat their employees?

The rating in each of those 3 areas is combined to give the product one overall score. One of the things I love most about this site is that you can rank how important each of those 3 factors are to you, which customizes your search results.

The first time I discovered this site was when I was searching for Grace’s first toothpaste.  A simple Google search brought me to Good Guide, which suggested that I try Tom’s of Maine Children’s Toothpaste.  I was pleased to see that this toothpaste rated a 8.0 for health, 8.2 for environment and 8.1 for society.

Doesn’t Grace look tickled pink to by trying out her toothpaste for the first time?  Love her!

To further explain the mission and process of Good Guide, here is a welcome video from their site:

The best way to experience everything that Good Guide has to offer is by exploring the site and using their convenient iPhone app.  Start by looking up some of your favorite products and see how they rank.  I hope that you are pleased with what you find.  If not, then you’re already at the perfect place to find a better replacement!

Have you replaced any of your regular products with a safer alternative?  I would love to hear about it!

  1. Rebekah, this seems like an awesome resource! I think it’s something my family will use ad refer to often! We use Tom’s toothpaste as well! BTW, I started a new link up for sharing healthy ideas, suggestions, going “green” tips, etc. and I hope you’ll join me next Wednesday! (Healthy 2day Wednesdays) Have a great weekend!

    1. Rachel, Since you also use Tom’s I have a question for you: Have you ever had your toothpaste tubes crack? We got a couple holes in Grace’s toothpaste. 🙁 Also, thanks for letting me know about your new weekly link up. I will certainly keep it in mind!

      1. No, we haven’t ever had a problem. Some tubes are plastic & some are the metal (not sure what it is) and we have 2 of the kid’s kinds, one of each, and they’re both fine. Sorry I couldn’t be more helpful! I bet if you write or call them, they will replace it!

  2. Thanks for the good info! I use the Enivronmental Working Group’s Skin Deep Database to evaluate the toxicity of our products. It really goes in depth about the ingredients, what each one is and why if could be harmful. Just another resource to help us live better!
