Sandy & Other News

Last weekend I attended a blogging conference for Christian women.  I came home from Allume feeling refreshed, challenged, inspired, and so very, very grateful for each of you.

Unfortunately, Sandy was coming and I had little time to enjoy my post-conference-high.  Quickly I made provisions for the wrath of Sandy.  Although we don’t live on the coast, it looked like we were going to be pounded with flooding rain and high winds.  Electric companies were warning people in our area that they could be out of power for a week or longer.

I had hopes of writing out blogging goals, drafting posts, going through business cards, and napping after Allume, but instead Nate and I…

  • Went to the grocery store for batteries and nonperishable food.
  • Organized our basement to protect items from the flooding we expected.
  • Cleared off the deck, porch, and lawn from things that could blow away.
  • Prepared hot meals to enjoy before the power went out.
  • Filled buckets with water to use for flushing the toilet.
  • Filled mason jars with drinking water.
  • Cleaned out the fridge.
  • Organized the fridge & freezers so I could grab stuff quickly.
  • Cried over the possibility of loosing things in my deep freezer (meat, baby food, and breast milk!!).  Thankfully, a friend with a generator put my mind at ease when she let us use space in her freezer.
  • Filled extra containers with water to help fill the empty space in my freezers and keep them cold longer.
  • Charged the portable DVD player and made popcorn so we could have a family movie night after the lights went out.

I was trying to think of everything.

Praise the Lord I didn’t actually need to do any of it.  We never lost power.  We didn’t have flooding in the basement.  We were lucky.  So very lucky.

  1. Oh my goodness, I can’t believe you guys did all that work and never needed to have done any of it. That’s wonderful, of course, but still! We were the same way. Although you had awesome preparation ideas I never thought about…charging the portable dvd player, filling buckets of water to flush the toilet, and preparing warm meals. We ended up with consistent rain and some 40mph winds and nothing else. It was actually more mild than our summertime thunderstorms. Haha! Can’t wait to hear all you learned and experienced at Allume! 🙂
