Frugal Photo Friday: Cheap Birthday Party Decorations

Frugal Photo Friday

Welcome to Frugal Photo Friday! This month I am partnering with Crystal, from Money Saving Mom. Each Friday we are sharing pictures of simple ways that we save money. This week I’m sharing 5 ideas for cheap birthday party decorations.

Cheap Birthday Party Decorations

I love finding creative, fun, and frugal ways to decorate for my kids’ birthday parties.

Block Themed Birthday Party

Block Themed Birthday Party

1) Use What You Have – For Noah’s first birthday I picked a block theme.  I used our blocks along with balloons to decorate the table.  For Grace’s pink themed 3rd birthday, I grabbed some curling ribbon from my gift wrap stash and “sprinkled” it around the cake and tables.

2) Highlight the Cake – Whether you make your own cake or buy one, the cake is highlight of any birthday party.  Don’t hide the cake in the kitchen!  Bring it out front and center to add to the party ambiance.

3) Crepe Paper is Your Friend – There are tons of ways to decorate with crepe paper.  Here are two of my favorite ways to use crepe paper:

Frayed Crate Paper

Frayed crepe paper was easy to make and it made the crepe paper seem a little more fancy.  🙂

Easy Birthday Party Streamers

This extremely easy streamer added a fun party feel to our living room.  It was inspired by The Diva Dish.  Pinch and twist the crepe paper onto string or yarn and add curling ribbon.

4) Plastic Colored Table Cloths Add Color – A bright pop of color can easily be added to any party with a plastic table cloth.  I bought mine for $1 and keep them to reuse for future parties.

5) Use Color Coordinated Paper Products – Personally, I try to use real plates and utensils as much as possible.  However, adding color coordinated paper products is a simple way to add color.  I buy all my paper products for $1 per pack.

Every time I throw a birthday party, I ask myself:

  • What do I already have in the house that I can use to decorate?
  • What can I buy for really cheap? (Preferably for $1 at the dollar store)
  • What can I save from this party to reuse in the future?

  1. I really like the photo of the punch bowl and the window mirror. I would never have thought about doing that. I will have to remember that for baby/bridal showers. Thank you for hosting the frugal photo Friday this month.

    1. You are very welcome, Karen! It has been fun.

I almost always use our little table with the window mirror as a focal point for our parties. It always makes me happy. 🙂

  2. Love this Rebekah! I esp. love the idea of making the cake the focal point…the way you did that with the pink cake and cupcakes was genius!

  3. This is actually very timely as I’m in the process of planning my soon to be 5 year olds ballerina themed party. 🙂 thanks for the frugal ideas!

    1. Look around and see if you can find some cheap tulle! That is perfect for a ballerina party. I used some to wrap around Grace’s chair just so she felt extra special.
