One thing that I always have to remind myself of is that the library is good for more than just fiction! There are so many wonderful nonfiction books to be found at the library. Today I want to focus on food! Did you ever think to get a cookbook from the library? How about a book on the latest fad diet? I decided to pick up the book Eat This Not That! 2010: The No-Diet Weight Loss Solution.
I’m really not into writing book reviews, but I thought it would be fun to share with you some things I learned from Eat This Not That. I hope this post can inspire you to think outside the fiction box when you go to the library AND maybe you’ll make a smarter choice at the drive thru!
The simple idea behind Eat This Not That is that you WILL eat ice cream, so why not eat this brand over that brand and save yourself some calories? The book is full of great information. It looks at menu options at popular restaurant chains, staple items at the grocery store and even how to survive the special holiday occasions. Here are some things that stood out to me:
At Your Favorite Restaurants – If you plan on rollin’ through a Wendy’s order a baked potato with chili. You’ll get the same amount of protein that is in a hamburger, but you’ll also get 6 times the amount of fiber! Plus it is under 500 calories. I personally tried it and really liked it.
At The Supermarket – I learned the most in this section of the book. Some of the highlights were:
- Yoplait Original 99% Fat Free Strawberry yogurt has more sugar than a KitKat candy bar!
- When buying pasta sauce, go with Classico. Even pasta sauce can have added sugar, but overall Classico is the healthiest.
- In the battle between Triscuits and Wheat Thins, Triscuits wins!
- Let’s all scream for ICE CREAM!! Edy’s Slow Churned line is as low-calorie as you’ll find out there. However, Bryers was awarded 3 out of the 8 “eat this” product slots. They both win in my book.
Holidays & Special Occasions – No one thinks of a hotdog as being a health food, but when you are heading to the ballpark the dog is a better choice over the nachos. If you are dying for a candy bar, the 100 Grand is the only candy bar that has less than 200 calories. The worst offender is Snickers.
Do you have a favorite food book I should pick up on my next trip the library? Perhaps a fun cookbook?
