A Day in the Life… 2022

Every year on January 18th I take one picture every hour from the moment I wake up until I go to bed that night. I end up taking pictures of the ordinary – supper prep, silly kids, trips the library, a cup of coffee, my computer screen.

These ordinary pictures are actually quite extraordinary. They are my everyday. They are my here and my now. They are a day in my life.

I’ve given myself an amazing gift to be able to look back at a typical day from the past years and see the changes from year to year. The gift of being able to see the extraordinary in my everyday routine because the truth is simple: today’s routine will not be the same for long. My children will grow. My jobs will change. These routines will not remain.

A Day in the Life of Rebekah – January 18, 2022

8:00 AM – The kids are up and getting ready for school. I have 3 kids in 3 different schools. Isaac is only in preschool 2 mornings a week though.

Next year will be even more chaotic. The kids will be in all different schools again, but Isaac will be in half day kindergarten. We don’t live on a school bus route, which means I will be busy driving everyone to and from school.

9:00 AM – We are home from dropping off the big kids at school, and Isaac is snuggled on the couch waiting for breakfast. He has named his little fox Sage Friend because he is friends with his stuffed puppy named Sage. How adorable is that?

10:00 AM – I’m fresh out of the shower and getting ready for the day. As far as makeup goes, I have a pretty simple routine mostly filled with drugstore brands. While getting ready, I listen to voxer messages and podcasts.

11:00 AM – I am at the gynecologist for a regular checkup. This is the first time I’ve been here in almost 5 years. 😳 Don’t be like me, ladies. Schedule an appointment today.

12:00 PM – While I was at the doctor, Isaac was hanging out with Nate’s mom and sister.

1:00 PM – Isaac and I are home and playing hide & seek. You can see Isaac crouching under my desk covered in Olive & June supplies. After a couple rounds, it will be time for lunch and quiet time.

2:00 PM – Isaac is in his room doing quiet time. Sometimes he naps. Today he is playing. I am doing some social media work, and just ordered 4 free at home COVID tests.

3:00 PM – This is a snapshot of what our living room looks like these days. The glider is always in the wrong spot because Noah leaves it there, his trombone music is out, and “his” laptop is on the floor. There are balls everywhere and a dying poinsettia plant left over from Christmas.

4:00 PM – The kids are all home from school and enjoying some screen time. I’m experimenting with my Olive & June polish because I’ve decided I don’t love this color on me. The color is KMC, and I added a top coat of Pink Goldfish. (Spoiler Alert: the experiment made it worse.)

5:00 PM – I’m making a roux for the soup tonight. It is a parmesan tomato basil soup – one of my family’s favorites.

6:00 PM – Nate came home from work. The kids are always so happy to see him and greet him with hugs. It is really sweet, and is one of my favorite moments every day.

7:00 PM – I am dropping Grace off for her dance class. This year she is taking hip hop and tap. She loves it so much. Grace is busy these days with her dance classes and theater rehearsals.

Sometimes I zip over to the discount grocery store close by. Other times I read in my car or catch up on voxer messages while I wait.

8:00 PM – It is soon bedtime and all 5 of us are gathered in the bathroom. 😆 I am drying Grace’s hair (while she reads a book) before I braid it. She will sleep with it braided, and it ends up being wavy in the morning.

I never think our house is small except for those random moments about once a week when we are all 5 smashed into the same bathroom. I don’t think we need a bigger house, but we might need a better schedule. 😆

9:00 PM – I am retiring to my bed to scroll social media, eat these salt & vinegar almonds, and read The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes. I took a break from my usual romance reads to read the Hunger Games prequel. It has been a good bonding experience with Grace (she recently read and highly enjoyed the entire series), but I’m ready for the book to be over.

I tend to stay up until 11:00 PM or midnight, but my photo documentations ends here for today because I am literally laying bed for the rest of night indulging in my book or TikTok.

Reflecting Back on my 2022 Day

Last year when I was reflecting back on my day, I noted that there has never been a more drastic change in my life than the between the year 2020 and 2021.

This year includes many of the same changes that were noteworthy last year since the pandemic is still a major force in our lives. Nate still works out of the basement a couple times a week, and we are still regularly using hand sanitizer and masks. Not long after documenting this day, our family came down with COVID after 2 years of diligent prevention.

Major changes from this year include:

  • Isaac doing preschool two mornings a week
  • Isaac finally sleeping through the night consistently
  • Grace loving theater
  • Noah’s obsession with Roblox
  • My new obsession with Olive & June

This was January 18, 2022. I look forward to seeing what changes come next year.

Thank you for following along on my 12th annual “A Day in the Life” project.
