I recently read a post on one of my new favorite blogs that was all about hand washing. I never thought too much about what I used to wash my hands. When hand sanitizer first came out I thought it was a bit excessive. Also I had heard people talking about us making “super germs” by using all these strong hand washing products. Still, I didn’t care what I washed my hands with as long as it smelled good and was cheap! That has all changed now, baby! And here is why… The key ingredient in antibacterial soap that does all the germ fighting is triclosan. Triclosan isn’t good because it affects ALL bacteria, including the good kind that … [Read more...]
Naturally Dyed Easter Eggs
I haven’t dyed Easter eggs in years. When I read a recent article at Simple Organic, I became inspired! The article gave instructions on how to use natural ingredients to dye Easter eggs. Since Grace is way too young to enjoy this process, I decided to keep it simple and only do half a dozen eggs. I also decided to use only ingredients that I already had on hand. Here are my two mixtures simmering. I used blue berries for purple. I used turmeric and yellow onion skins for yellow. I had mixed feelings about the results. Place the wet paper towel on the problem spot and let it sit for at least 15 minutes. Then wipe the surface clean. We have a problem with grime building up on our cold water faucet at the sink. When we turn off the water after washing our hands, water drips down and the grime slowly builds up. Check out these … [Read more...]
A Documentary Worth A Watch: Food Inc
Food Inc The documentary Food Inc is all about where our food comes. Correction: how our food is manufactured. Now, I don’t mean how cheese puffs or bubble gum is made. I’m talking about the “real” stuff… the “natural” stuff that isn’t really supposed to be manufactured. Chicken. Beef. Corn. Where do these things come from? How are they grown? What are the animals fed and how do they live? How does this affect us and why should we care? What you find out is sure to surprise you. There were two things I was scared about before watching this movie. One was that I was going to see animals being slaughtered and the other was that I … [Read more...]
