I used to feel guilty because my kids don't have a lot of daily chores. Then I started making chore lists for the kids on Saturdays like my mom used to do. Saturday chore lists are magical. Grace and Noah have fully embraced them, and I have learned (once again) that I need to find systems that work for me rather than copying what others do. Of course there are things that need to be done more often than once a week. Making Saturday chore lists for my kids does not mean that they aren't helpful throughout the week, but the Saturdays we make an extra effort to get some things done. The key to success with my Saturday chore lists … [Read more...]
5 Ways Having a Baby is Easier the 3rd Time Around (and one big way it is harder)
It is completely natural for new moms to be nervous, yet hopeful when having their first baby. (I certainly was!) The thought of having more than one child may seem insanely difficult to a first time mom, but for myself, having a baby was easier the 3rd time around. This post contains affiliate links. 5 Ways Having a Baby is Easier the 3rd Time Around (and one big way it is harder) 1) I had experience giving birth. - My first baby had a fast and natural birth. My second baby was a breech birth via c-section. No matter which way things went with baby number three, I had already walked through both options. No two births are ever … [Read more...]
Crushing the “Perfect Mom” Illusion
You have seen her before. She is the perfect mom. She totally has her act together, and you can't help but wonder what is her magic secret? Today I was that perfect mom. Trust me. I didn't feel like that mom, yet just hours ago another mom asked me for my secret. We were at a moms' group at my church. The prayer request that I shared at my table was for better sleep. Little Isaac is 9 months old. Like most babies, his sleep habits can vary, which means that my sleep varies. Better sleep is always a good prayer request for this mama. As we were finishing up, another mom said to me, "Rebekah, I just have to say that for someone who … [Read more...]

Dear First Time Mom (the real reason why parents are more relaxed with baby #2)
Dear First Time Mom, Motherhood is hard. Really hard. Don't look at your friends with more children and think that they must have it so much harder than you do. Yes, they have different challenges than you do, but they also have experience on their sides. The first time you bring a baby home, you have no idea what you are doing. You may have taken a class to prepare. You probably read parenting magazines or blogs. Perhaps you experienced babysitting. All of that is helpful, but it is nothing compared to the experience of actually parenting your baby. After one of Grace's first doctor appointments, I asked the nurse, "So what do I do … [Read more...]
The First Day of Kindergarten Almost Broke Me
My precious Grace entered the new world of kindergarten. I thought I was prepared and wouldn't be that emotional about it, but I should have known better. Other people's "first day of school" photos have been making me cry since Grace was a baby. Why did I think it would be different for me when it was my own child??? The stress started for me the night before her first day. We had kindergarten orientation that evening and I was more than annoyed that we were receiving critical information the night before school started. One new piece of information that I found out was that I needed to send a snack with Grace every day. On the drive … [Read more...]
