A Day in the Life of… 2016

Welcome to the 6th Annual “A Day in the Life of…” photography project!

Every year on January 18th I take one picture every hour from the moment I wake up until I go to bed that night. I end up taking pictures of the ordinary – supper prep, cranky kids, trips the library, a cup of coffee, my computer screen.

These ordinary pictures are actually quite extraordinary. They are my everyday. They are my here and my now. They are a day in my life.

I feel like I’ve given myself an amazing gift to be able to look back at a typical day from the past years and see the changes from year to year. The gift of being able to see the extraordinary in my everyday routine because the truth is simple: today’s routine will not be the same for long. My children will grow. My jobs will change. These routines will not remain.

A Day in the Life of Rebekah – January 18, 2016

8:30 AM

8:30 AM – About to crawl out of bed. I have been blessed with kids who sleep late and I’m taking advantage of it! Grace has afternoon kindergarten, but next year our morning routine will completely change.

9:30 AM

9:30 AM – Making breakfast. The kids have become obsessed with sausage. We are down to our last link.

10:30 AM

10:30 AM – “Whatcha doing?” – me

“Following you. Because I like you.” – Grace

Then she asked me questions about why my clothes are bigger than hers and when she will wear a bra.

11:30 AM

11:30 AM – In line at Walmart (I hate coming here) to return something I bought in September because I’m super organized like that.

12:30 PM

12:30 PM – Home from the store and greeted by the chaos of my kitchen. Normally, we would be walking home from dropping Grace off at school, but she is off today since it is Martin Luther King Day. I’m thankful for the relaxed schedule amongst the chaos.

1:30 PM

1:30 PM – The kids have been fed, and I’m trying to tackle the chaos of the kitchen while catching up on one of my favorite podcasts. I am addicted to podcasts. Also pictured: Grace’s kindergarten handwriting and a touching card from a dear friend.

2:30 PM

2:30 PM – The chaos has been conquered!!

3:30 PM

3:30 PM – Noah is napping, Grace is having quiet time, and I’m finally sitting down for lunch. Since a picture of egg rolls and Netflix is boring, here is a before and after of Grace’s books. I am trying to KonMari the kids’ books and it is painful! They are keeping ones I don’t love, and wanting to get rid of ones that spark tons of joy in me. I’m still not sure about the life changing magic of tidying up.

4:30 PM

4:30 PM – After fighting with my computer to play videos, I won! Netflix is working again, and One Tree Hill during nap time is making me oh so happy.

5:30 PM

5:30 PM – Making supper with my constant kitchen helper. We are having Chili Pie, the perfect cold weather dish for this frigid night.

6:30 PM

6:30 PM – I’m putting the finishing touches on supper, and the kids are playing dress-up. “We’re getting married!”

7:30 PM

7:30 PM – Look at what a good person I am! I am mopping my kitchen. But don’t be fooled! It has been a loooong time since I’ve done this. #timepassageawarenessdisorder And the only reason I’m doing it tonight is because some gross liquid leaked out of the bottom of the trash bag.

8:30 PM

8:30 PM – Snuggles with Daddy before bed.

9:30 PM

9:30 PM – It is Monday night, so of course The Bachelor is on! I am enjoying Ben as the bachelor this season. He seems genuine. I’m also working on a newsletter for my church’s moms’ group.

10:30 PM

10:30 PM – I’m watching Bachelor Live, the lame “after show” for The Bachelor. Plus I’m playing this Cooking Fever game that I’m obsessed with, but I’m about to pack it all up and head to bed. Good night!

Take a peek back in time!

Thank you for sharing a day in my life!

  1. Love the pic of the kids playing dress up and of Noah and Nate. And so fun to peek into your day, as always. Very impressed by your nice, clean floor. Can’t wait to talk Bachelor with you this weekend!!! xoxo

  2. This is fun! Do you plan on making montages of these photos at a certain point? I’ve seen projects similar to these, like a picture taken every day for a year. I like the idea of a the dad who recorded a personal message video every year for his daughter when it was her birthday until she got married. Super sweet!

    1. I took one photo every day for a year in 2008. That was before I had a smart phone, so I had to take my digital camera with me everywhere! It was a pain by the end of the year, but I finished!

  3. This is a great idea and I totally plan to steal it! I have been enjoying listening to your podcasts with Megan on Sorta Awesome so I had to come and check out your blog. Love all you gals!
