Going Green with Molly’s Suds {Giveaway}

*** This giveaway is now CLOSED. ***

I was thrilled when Monica, from Molly’s Suds, sent me their liquid and powder laundry detergents.  For the past couple of months I’ve been testing them out.

From the Molly’s Suds website:

Here at Molly’s Suds we realize that the average consumer is not aware of the dangers of common household chemicals. We want to educate consumers on these dangers and provide them with products that do not contain harsh chemicals such as: sodium lauryl/laureth sulfate, phosphates, parabens, formaldehyde and 1,4-dioxane.

All of these chemicals are toxic and our bodies store them and you guessed it, they are found in many of your every day bath, body and household products. 95% of laundry detergents have formaldehyde and 1,4-dioxane!

Our mission is to provide affordable, effective and eco-responsible products that are safe for the planet, your family and gentle to your laundry.

I’d never used a natural laundry detergent before and had no idea what to expect.  Here are my thoughts on Molly’s Suds:

1. The powered detergent wasn’t as powderey as I expected, but that is because the chemical used for that texture in conviential detergent isn’t good for you.  So Molly’s Suds leaves it out!

2. The detergent smells slightly like peppermint, but that scent washes out and doesn’t stick to the clothes.  I thought that I would miss the “clean” smell of my convientional detergent, but I really didn’t think twice about it.

3.  Personally, my two laundry hot spots are the sheets and Grace’s bibs. My sheets felt just as fresh as with my regular detergent, even without the “clean” smell.  Grace’s nasty-food-has-been-dried-on-for-days bibs got just as clean as normal.  They weren’t perfect, but how can they be when spaghetti sauce has been sitting on them for a week and I didn’t pre-treat them??

4.  This detergent is super concentrated! It seemed like I was barely using any!  The tub of powder detergent makes 96 regular loads.  That’s not even $0.30 per load!  With a HE washer you’ll only pay $0.14 a load!  Crazy, right?!?!

5.  Personally, I prefer the liquid over the powder detergent. It is recommended that you wash with warm or hot water when using the powder.  I tried using it with cold water a couple of times, but I was concerned about how well the detergent was dissolving.  I only use warm/hot water for my loads of whites, so that is kind of a bummer.

Two lucky readers will win a package of Molly’s Suds! The first winner will get their choice between liquid or powder.  The second winner will get whatever is left!  (Please note: In general liquid detergent is recommended for septic tanks.)

To enter leave me a comment telling me what kind of laundry detergent you normally use.  Liquid?  Powder?  Conventional?  Natural?

You may have up to two more entries in the random drawing if you:

  • Follow Molly’s Suds on Twitter or like them on Facebook and leave me a separate comment telling me you have done so.
  • Subscribe to Simply Rebekah via email or RSS and leave me a separate comment telling me how you subscribe.  If you already subscribe, you can leave that in a comment also.

Disclosure: Two winners will be chosen by random & notified by email after this giveaway closes on July 19, 2011 at 11:59 PM.  Giveaway is open to USA only.  Molly’s Suds provided me with liquid & powder detergent to review and keep.  All opinions are my own.  If you enjoy reading silly fine print like this then be sure to check out my full disclosure policy.

  1. Love it. We currently use Charlie’s Soap, which is a natural powder detergent.

  2. I normally use powder – currently Arm & Hammer free and clear – whatever I can get nearly free. I occasionally make my own. We have a hard time with fragrances, so I am intrigued by the peppermint smell that washes away clean!

  3. I am a Tide girl through and through. It will REALLY have to be good to get me to switch ; )

  4. I currently make our own all natural homemade liquid detergent, but would love to have an all natural detergent to turn to when I run out from time to time! Hope to win!

  5. I use whatever is on sale unscented liquid. It’s a cost saving thing. With coupons I usually get my loads at $.03 per load. But I’d be willing to try something more green, especially if it comes with lovely reusable buckets.

  6. I use conventional liquid, but would like something without harsh chemicals (I just don’t like paying tons)

and I have a septic, so I guess I better stick with liquid! 🙂

  7. We were using Charlies Soap for a while but I’d love to try Molly’s liquid! The only powder detergent I like is Arm and Hammer – I love the scent! 🙂

  8. I have to be honest, I usually use whatever laundry detergent is on sale, but usually get liquid. I do like those purex sheets where the detergent is in the sheet and then the sheet goes in the dryer for softener. But honestly it would be GReat to use products that are not wasteful and chemical free!!

  9. we use whatever is on sale- right now we are using purex with zout-liquid
