Lovin’ The Library: Summer Reading Programs

I am so excited about the summer reading programs at my local library.  My library (and probably most libraries) have summer programs for children and adults.  I signed Grace up for the children’s program under the “non-reader” category.  🙂  All I have to do is read her 30 books, write down the titles and turn in the form.  Once I turn in her completed form she will get to pick a prize/toy from a box and will get some coupons.  The coupons are for a free ticket to a local baseball game, a free train ride on a touristy railroad in my area and a free ice cream cone from McDonalds.

I’ve been told that as kids get older and start reading the books themselves the prizes get even better.  There is even a free ticket to a local children’s amusment park!

I signed up for the adult reading program, but I don’t know what the prizes are.  For every book I read I can turn in my name for a drawing.  We’ll have to see if I win anything.

Have you ever taken advantage of a summer reading program?  More importantly, should I let Grace actually eat her free ice cream???

Update:  Since originally writing this we have completed Grace’s reading program!  We turned in her form and she picked out a ball from the toy box.  I’m still debating about if I should let her eat the ice cream.  🙂  I’ve read two books for the adult program and I’m working on a third.

I would let her eat “real” ice cream, but not from Mcdonalds….I’m not sure what’s in McDonalds ice cream mix,but I’m positive that there’s high fructose corn syrup which is bad enough for me not to eat it. The reading program sounds amazing by the way =)

My sister recently went through McD drive-thru & ordered some ice cream. The employee actually said to her, “Are you sure? It gives most people diarrhea.” LOL-Let the Truth be told = )

You know I know you are very health conscious and all. But I’ve found as a parent sometimes you need to let go and let your kids be kids. After all, we can do the best we can, but before you know it they will be gone. It’s not all bad lettin them have some “guilty pleasures”. 🙂 Just my opinion.

I agree with Sunny. Plus if you give her something that’s all natural like Hagendaz’s 5 ingredient ice creams, you know you’re giving her something with only 5 ingredients that you can name. Abby is a big fan of lemon, vanilla, and chocolate varieties.

I’m not against giving her ice cream, I just think her first taste of something sweet like that should be special.

Liam is almost finished with his list as well. Let’s go to the game together. We love the library! What books have you read this summer? I just finished mine last night and need a new one to start.

We love the library too, but hardly ever remember to redeem the coupon prizes. We’ve discovered that we can get cake pans and wii games from the library too!
