10 Affordable Housewarming Gifts

It is fun to bless someone with a housewarming gift, but it isn’t fun to break your budget trying to do it. Each of these affordable housewarming gifts will cost you less than $30, most of them are less than $20, and some are even less than $10.
10 Affordable Housewarming Gifts
1. Baked Goods – Any homemade treat will do, but I especially like the idea of bread. You can write something in the card about “breaking bread together” in their new home. (Don’t forget that the bread doesn’t need to be made in your home! Picking some up from a local bakery is just as good.)
2. Flowers & Houseplants – Fresh cut flowers are always an appropriate gift. A nice planter will most likely cost more, but it will last longer. The “welcome” sign in the planter above is a nice touch, don’t you think?
3. Gift Cards – When I moved into a new apartment just before Nate and I got married, his parents gave me gift cards to several local restaurants. It was fun to explore the restaurants in my new neighborhood.
4. Message Blocks – It can be a risky move to buy a decorative piece for someone’s new home, but these mantel blocks from DaySpring are really neat. They come with a cheat sheet to help you create 22 different words. Right now they are 50% off on clearance for just $24.99.
5. Candle – Yankee Candles makes a Home Sweet Home scent that is one of my favorites. I used to give this as a gift all the time, but I’ve cut back since I’ve learned that candles aren’t really that great for you.
6. Key Chain – A friend of mine gave me this customized key chain when we bought our house. I really like this one from Lisa Leonard. You could customize it with the last name, address, or the year the home was purchased.
7. Note Cards – It is always nice to have some blank note cards around. I really like these made by C.R. Gibson. They are simple and pretty.
8. Canned Goods – Do you make your own jam, salsa, pickles, or canned fruit? Here are some recipes and inspirational posts to help:
- Homemade Sweet & Sour Salad Dressing (This isn’t canned, but it still works.)
- Rhubarb Jam Recipe
- Salsa Canning Vlog: a ridiculous & silly “how to” video
- I can Can-Can-Can!
9. Freezer Meals – This isn’t a very conventional gift, but it really is helpful. Everyone appreciates being able to get out of cooking from time to time – especially people who are busy unpacking! Here are some of my favorite freezer friendly recipes:
- Pizza Tot Casserole
- Creamy Baked Chicken
- Curried Lentils
- Honey Mustard Baked Chicken
- Garlic White Lasagna
- 5 more freezer friendly recipes
10. Mason Jar Gift Set – This exact gift was given to a friend of mine who loves to can and it fit her fabulously. The mason jars are filled with pantry items like popcorn, oatmeal, raisins, pasta, and animal crackers. There are also cookies and a new kitchen towel. Mason jars can be used for more than just canning (decoration, food storage, etc.), but people who love to can will probably appreciate this gift the most.

Well, I’m super practical so I loved a couple housewarming gifts we got—one friend gave me some special cleaners for granite counter tops and smooth top stoves since these were new to me and I wasn’t sure how to care for them at first!
My mom said she wanted to give me a hanging basket or nice planter but she lives across the country from me so she sent some money and I picked out a largish planter for the front porch that I can fill with seasonal flowers. Something pretty to make the front entrance more homey.
We also got some cookies from new neighbors as a ‘welcome’ which is always fun too!
I love those ideas, Mary Ann!
Mary Ann, would you please share the cleaner for the stove to you used that worked best? I’ve never had one before, we’re military, renting & have to move to a new duty station by June. I always leave my rents as clean as I can & this glass top GRRRRRR
Regarding number 6, I would never put an address on a house key, because if the key were to get lost, and the wrong person found it, that just gives me the goose bumps. I love the idea of the date, though, very cute, or welcome home, etc. Love all of these ideas, and we have lots of homes on the market nearby, so I’ll definitely be using some of them! Homemade bread is probably the least expensive, and one of the most appreciated!
Oh my goodness!! That is such a good point about the address on the key!!!! Holy cow. I can’t believe I didn’t think of that.
We give fire extinguishers to our friends in new builds, usually the kitchen ones for grease fires. It started as joke, but was well received, so now we give them to everyone.
THAT IS BRILLIANT! Seriously, that is such a good idea. I love it!
My best friend made me a gift basket from the dollar store when I first moved into my house almost ten years ago. Everyone bought me cute towels, wash cloths, candles, etc…But she got me the stuff I REALLY needed! Like dish detergent and a scrubby brush, a spaghetti strainer, a broom and dustpan, a small trashcan, etc. Seriously, it’s been 8 years and I still use some of this stuff almost daily.
That is a brilliant idea!
I always buy personalized address labels for folks. (Colorful Images is my go-to source.) They’ve always been a big hit. Not expensive, but personal, and not what most people think of doing for themselves on Day 1..
Fantastic idea! Where do you order your labels?

My favorite was a welcome mat for the front door. I’m kind of picky. Though it turned out to be just my style!
I’d bee careful with baked goods. More and more people are finding that they have gluten sensitivities, and most people would do well to eliminate these modern grains anyway.
You are right, Angela. Baked goods can be a bit tricky if you don’t know their current diet restrictions.
I love your gift ideas! They are all so versatile that I could give them to family, friends, coworkers, etc.
I am very practical when gift giving. I usually find out what they need, and then get something they wouldn’t usually splurge for.
Hey, practical is good! Plus it is always nice to have some splurge on you. I’m sure you are great at finding the perfect gift.
I give a basket, with bottle of wine or sparkling cider to share with friends, a candle, picture frame, salt so their food has flavor.
That sounds like an awesome gift!
