How to Make a Belt for Your Baby or Toddler
Baby’s got BACK!
Well…. actually no…. Â My baby doesn’t have “back.” Â My baby is actually quite small.
Poor Grace is so small that we have a hard time keeping her pants up.
She isn’t a fan of this look.

I kept thinking that this poor girl needed a belt, but they just don’t make belts for toddlers.
Fast forward to me shopping at Walmart. Â I glance across the isle and see 3 skinny belts in the tween section. Â They were perfect!
Let operation Keep-Up-My-Baby’s-Pants begin!
Step 1: Find a skinny belt.
I found this 3-pack of belts at Walmart for about $6. Â Like I said they were in the tween/teen section, but any skinny belt could work. Â You may even have one in your own closet! Â Another great place to look is any thrift store. Â That might be the cheapest place to find one.

Step 2: Add new holes.
Put your new belt on that adorable toddler of yours and take note of where new holes should be added. Â Then find someone with a belt hole punch to add the new holes.
I had holes added at the mall. Â I stopped at a kiosk that was selling belts and speciality belt buckles. Â The gentleman running the kiosk was so nice! Â He added several holes to all three of my belts and refused to take any money for it.
Besides random belt kiosks at the mall, I would check at leather or shoe repair shop. Â Or you could purchase your own leather hole punch from Amazon for about $10.
Step 3: Trim off extra belt.
Grab a pair of scissors and trim your toddler belt down to size.  My hero at the mall kiosk recommends sealing the trimmed end with super glue.  I didn’t do that, but if I notice one of Grace’s belts fraying then I’ll add it.

Step 4: Do the Happy Dance with your little one & rejoice in pants that stay up!
This is a much better look, don’t you think?

Making a belt for my toddler has saved me money, time and frustration. I can embrace hand-me-downs and sales racks with out worrying about her pants being a “perfect” fit. Â Plus Grace can wear her pants longer since I don’t have to wait for her to grow into the waist.
What tips do you have for making your children’s clothes fit better?

Thank you!!! I always have this problems with my Grace too! She is so tall for her age so I am having to buy her 2T’s and then the waists are huge!!! Her diaper is always hanging out!! Definitely will be going to the store to find skinny belts!
Leah, if there is one less toddler sporting a plummer’s crack because of this post then it wasn’t written in vain! haha! Seriously though, I’m glad to help and I hope you have success making your own belts.
hey!! they actually have these things that hook just on the back belt loops on baby/tddler pants called “dapper snappers” and they just cinch the pants tighter! next time im at the shop that sells them, ill grab you one so you can try it out!!
Dapper Snappers??!?! What a cute name!! Thanks for the tip.
Wow! Thank you for this post! Abby has the same issue… but it’s because she has a belly. By the end of the day her pants stay riding half-way down what she calls her booty-butt. I’m going to give this a try.
Dorothy, please let me know if you have good luck with this! No “booty-butt” should be exposed. 🙂
I have a mom who can sew, so she alters things for my skinny mini. 🙂 (By the way, it gets easier when they pass toddler sizes and pants come in “slim”…) But this is very clever and totally adorable!
Somehow I think that life would be much easier in general if I knew how to sew. 😉
If you think its hard finding a belt for your toddler daughter, try finding one for a boy. We were so tired of his pants falling down so, after he almost fell backwards down the stairs because the shorts had fallen down too far, I set out to find an answer that was practical and not to “girly”. I found my answer in the pet section. Dog collars make great toddler belts, just measure the kid’s waist, buy the right size collar, cut out the leach ring, and your good to go!
Best part is, no sewing required.
Jake, that is hilarious and genius!!! I’ll have to remember that trick now that I have a little boy.
Love the dog collet for a toddler belt .
Great idea!
This is fab. Thanks!
