My 6 Coconut Oil Experiments {giveaway}

*** This giveaway is now closed. ***

It seems like coconut oil is the new rage.  At least among the blogs that I read it is!  It is super natural and better for you than regular oil.  I was thrilled when I won a giveaway (Thanks, Donna!) for a HUGE jar of Gold Label Virgin Coconut Oil from Tropical Traditions.

Now I had a ton of coconut oil.  So what do I do with it?

6 Different Ways I Have Used Coconut Oil:

1) Bake – I have discovered that brownies and muffins made with coconut oil are instantly a-ma-zing!  Remember these awesome whole wheat chocolate zucchini muffins I told you about?  These are to die for with coconut oil instead of vegetable oil.

2) Cook – I hate to admit this, but cooking with coconut oil didn’t really sound that appealing to me.  A brownie that taste a little like coconut sounds awesome!  My chicken?  Well… maybe not so much.  Guess what.  I was wrong.  I made chicken fried rice with the coconut oil and I can’t imagine making it any other way now.  Soooo good.  For an insanely long list of recipes using coconut oil, visit Tropical Tradition’s Coconut Recipes.

3) Popcorn – The only way I make popcorn is on the stove.  I used to use olive oil.  That was good, but coconut oil is so much better.  I’m drooling thinking about it.  I need to try coconut oil in my homemade kettle corn!

I know what you’re thinking.  “But… but… I don’t like coconut.”  Honestly, it doesn’t matter.  My husband is not a coconut fan.  He loves the muffins.  He can’t get enough of the fried rice.  I admitted that there was coconut oil used in both and he promises me that he still loves both dishes.  (He doesn’t like popcorn no matter how I make it.  Silly man.)

If my husband’s testimony isn’t cutting it for you then maybe one of these non-food ways of using coconut oil will spark your interest.

4) Frizz Control – I went to the beach this summer.  Every single time I go I’m amazed at how much my wavy hair hates being at the beach.  This year I combated the frizz with coconut oil.  Start at the ends of your hair and work up from there.  It worked like a charm.

5) Lip Gloss – I lost my favorite chapstick.  I used coconut oil instead.  It made me happy.   😀  If you don’t like the taste of coconut then you might feel less happy.

6) Homemade Deodorant – I have been wanting to try this for a long time.  Thanks to this gigantic jar of coconut oil from Tropical Traditions, I could finally test this out!  The recipe was very simple:

  • 1/4 cup baking soda
  • 1/4 cup corn starch
  • 5 tablespoons coconut oil

I mixed the ingredients together and put it in an empty deodorant container.  I haven’t tried it yet, but I’ll be sure to provide updates with my thoughts.

  1. Rebekah – We LOVE Coconut oil. Our bodies NEED coconut oil. It tends to improve brain function. We use it for body lotion, hair conditioner, lip gloss, to remove those stubborn labels from things we don’t want them stuck to, to condition and clean leather goods, to cook with…. Yes, popcorn is amazing with coconut oil and butter on it. (We use a hot air popper, so indulge in butter & coconut oil on it.) Add a T. to your oatmeal or smoothies in the AM – brain function seems to benefit. My list could go on and on – but I need to go start school. Thanks for this opportunity to inform others about the attributes of coconut oil.

  2. I would love to try this in baking or for stir-fry. I don’t care for coconut either but your husband convinced me to give it a try.

  3. Chap stick sounds like such a great idea! I’d love to try it in baking, cooking and perhaps even soap making!! Great giveaway – thanks!

  4. I don’t need to enter the giveaway because I just got a GALLON of coconut oil for a great price through a group order, but I just wanted to say that we use it for so many things and I *love* it! Thanks for this great post, and for linking up to Your Green Resource! 🙂

  5. I would use that giant jar of coconut oil to do all my holiday baking. It’s also really tasty on whole wheat toast!

  6. My favorite use for it so far is putting it in graham cracker crusts instead of butter. I did this with a cheesecake, and it was soooo good.

I like your idea of using it in muffins. I make some apple muffins that might benefit from it. And I also like the idea of putting it in chicken fried rice. I put toasted almonds in mine, and I think those flavors would go really well together.

  7. We LOVE LOVE coconut oil here too! It’s awesomesauce on popcorn, and I actually really like it on my toast that I eat with my eggs in place of butter. I love it for baking as well. I’ve also used it as a cloth diaper safe bottom balm, lip gloss, deep conditioning treatment, and rubbed into dry elbows. 🙂

  8. We are a coconut oil household too! I agree that baking with coconut oil makes everything taste that much better. I made a pumpkin pie this week and used coconut oil in the crust and it was SO good. That subtle flavor of coconut really added a lot.

  9. I love coconut oil! I make homemade deodorant with it. It’s super easy to make and works great! Also use it for baking and as a nightly moisturizer on my face!

  10. I’d love to use it in baking, and on my baby’s butt! I heard its a great diaper rash cream and safe for cloth diapers 🙂 thanks!

  11. I have only recently started using the coconut oil for cooking. I absolutely love it. I am drooling over the thought of popcorn made with it!

  12. I love coconut oil! I use it instead of conventional diaper cream on Emmaline’s bottom! It’s cloth diaper safe, anti-bacterial/anti-fungal/anti-parasitic and so moisturizing! love!!!

  13. I love coconut so I’d use it in several ways. I’d definitely try baking with it, making popcorn in it, using it for lip gloss, and using it in my hair.

  14. I’d like to try it in brownies or those muffins you mentioned! Never even heard of it before, but sounds good.

  15. I plan to use coconut oil for diaper-rash with our second who is due in the next few weeks. Great stuff!

  16. I L O V E coconut oil!! We use it for massage/moisturizing, cooking, in coffee (SO good) and for all sorts of baby skin needs! We are almost out of our little jar.. this would be perfect for us!

  17. I would love to win some coconut oil. I am going broke buying it right now. My son has excema that we are battling through nutrition and diet but the outward relief is through coconut oil. I love to use it for any food stuffs I make. And a dollop in my coffee! Amazing start to the day. Or in my tea at the end of the day… Delish.
I did not read all the above comments but one of my favorite non-food uses is for lube. ::do not use with rubber based contraceptives:: I reaxct easily to lots of products and am very vulnerable to low-grade yeast infections from irritation. Coconut oil sures that irritation.

  18. Great review! I have been wanting to try coconut oil. Like you, I’ve been seeing it on lots of blogs I visit. I would love to try it on popcorn! Thanks!!

  19. i already use coconut oil in so many ways – deodorant, cooking, baking, in homemade wheat bread, helps skin irritations… we just love it.

  20. I can never have enough coconut oil. I use it for everything in cooking and my other favorites are deodorant, skin and hair care.

  21. Love it for so many home made goodies for the body – deodorant, lotion, lip balm, hair gloss – it rocks!

  22. I love using coconut oil in my graham cracker crusts for banana cream pies. Everyone always asks what the secret is to such a great tasting crust!

  23. i use it on everything…but i think my fv is using it instead of lotion. makes my skin super soft.

  24. I use it for everything I cook. I too like to make muffins with coconut oil and popcorn. It is the best.

  25. i LOVE coconut oil….I mainly use it for cooking/baking and for a face/body moisturizer. Haven’t had any dryness or oily issues with my skin in a year!

  26. I would use it in cooking (frying eggs in coconut oil is delicious) and as a shaving cream substitute for my legs.

  27. I didn’t know about using it for popcorn, so I would try that! Also, I have a recipe for deodorant that I have been wanting to make so I would do that too.

  28. Cooking & baking but I’ve read many people have used it as a moisturizer. Now that the cold weather is on the way – I’m am looking for more natural ways to keep the itching dry skin away!

  29. I would love to win this because I’m always running out of coconut oil! I use it for a lot of the same things you do – homemade deodorant (It’s great, I promise! I just put it in a glass container and use it lotion-style), hair tamer, eye makeup remover (made my lashes longer!), lotion, massage oil, etc. I will admit that I don’t like to cook with it. I just don’t like the taste. I can deal with it spread on toast and topped with cinnamon, though.

Just found your blog from a link on Simple Organic’s newsletter and can’t wait to check out the rest of your posts.

  30. I use coconut oil to “grease” cooking pans, fry eggs, and moisturize skin.
I’d love to try making deodorant!

  31. Oh the ways I would use the coconut oil…stovetop popcorn (because thats how we roll too), instead of olive oil for skillet food (never would have thought of that either but love it!), as a moisturizer and for making my own deodorant, lip balm and hard lotion bars. Love coconut oil! Thanks for the giveaway.

  32. i would love to try cooking with it. Also I would like to try the homemade deodorant recipe, i have never found one that works.

  33. I have a list of lotions, potions, body rubs, etc. that require coconut oil. I haven’t been brave enough to try most of them due to the cost of ingredients, so winning would be fabulous! Thx for the opportunity. :o)

  35. My doctor has advised me to try a vegan diet, due to numerous serious health issues. I am also trying to switch my current choices to healthier options (ie: switch to coconut oil over shortening or hydrogenated veggie oil). My daughter has some of the thickest, long, curliest hair you’d ever see (she’s 4), I’ve tried all kinds of products to improve managability and strength to her hair, but have really not found anything satisfactory. I’d LOVE to try popcorn with coconut oil, since I can’t stand just plain popcorn, and not being able to have butter, I really have a craving for butter. Coconut oil sounds yummy!

  36. I love coconut oil. I use it in brownies, pancakes, waffles,… I want to try making some toothpaste.

  37. I plan to use coconut oil in my diet to improve my health. I also want to use it as a moisturizer.

  38. I would use it in and for everything. I love to bake with it, it is an excellent moisturizer, great for chapped lips…..might even try the detergent AND their pumpkin fudge recipe would make a wonderful holiday gift!

  39. I don’t need more coconut oil so if you draw me, draw again!
Just wanted to say I love popcorn popped in coconut oil! It is the very best! It definitely works great for any type of frying you do with oil. I really want to try making hard lotion bars, which I hear can be made using coconut oil, also lip gloss and deodorant. They are all on my “try to make” list! 🙂

  40. I’ve been wanting to try coconut oil for about a year now, and just keep putting it off…lol….I would use it in our cooking, baking, and as a moisturizer and lip balm for sure, maybe try your deodorant recipe too! 🙂 I LOVE how versatile it is!!
