My Personal Hulu Favorites

Younger
This is one of my most favorite shows of all time. Younger centers around Liz, a 40 year old woman who recently divorced. She lies about her age to get a job and to stay with her new, younger boyfriend.
The first season lays a good foundation for the storyline. Season 2 is when I really started to fall in love with the characters, but season 3 is when I became a raging fan.
Younger is funny, sexy, and light, yet also very addictive. I wouldn’t rate it PG, so proceed with caution.

Timeless
Timeless is a combination of action, sci-fi, and history with a touch of romance. The show follows Lucy, a history professor hired to travel through time.
Lucy is part of a 3-person team chasing the villain, Flynn, throughout time to preserve history. Each episode focuses on a different historical event, like the assassination of Abraham Lincoln, the moon landing, and The Alamo.
Normally, this would not be my kind of show, but I loved seeing the different time periods in history and uncovering the many layers to the mystery surrounding the characters.
I would rate Timeless as pretty clean. There is no language or nudity. There is a lot of gun violence, but none of it is gorey.

Handmaid’s Tale
This Hulu original is powerful and thought provoking. The characters are set in a dystopian world that is being ruled by an extreme religious group.
Infertility has swept the land with only a few left who are able to bare children. The women who are able to get pregnant are assigned to the most elite and powerful couples as handmaids. Their job is to conceive children with the husband for the couple to adopt as their own.
Although this is one of the most fascinating shows I have watched, it is dark and often disturbing. It might hit a bit too close to home for the current mood in 2020.
To get a better feel for if The Handmaid’s Tale would be a good fit for you, I recommend listening to this episode of the Sorta Awesome podcast.

The Bachelor Franchise
When I am unable to watch shows from The Bachelor Franchise live, I catch up on Hulu. This includes The Bachelor, The Bachelorette, Bachelor In Paradise, and the newest show, Listen To Your Heart.
Regardless of the unique formats of the Bachelor Franchise shows, each one focuses on trying to find love through reality TV competition. As a viewer, I am rooting for love as the drama unfolds.

The Resident
Although this medical drama certainly focuses on medicine, I would argue that the show really is about power. It is about the power struggles amongst the staff, and their battle to have the power of medicine on their side.
Since The Resident originally aires on network television, it is a fairly clean show. All 3 seasons of The Resident on Hulu.

Grey’s Anatomy
If The Resident is about power, then Grey’s Anatomy is about relationships. Like The Resident, it is also a medical drama series, but it is focused more on the personal lives of the staff.
I have been watching Grey’s Anatomy since season one. I use Hulu to keep up with the show rather than watching it live. With Hulu, you can only watch the most recent season at any given time.

This Is Us
This is Us is one of the most unique show formats I have ever watched. This Is Us follows the trials of a family as the show jumps through time. Flashbacks from the past, as well as glimpses into the future, are interlaced throughout present time storylines.
This is a emotional, family drama that covers big issues like, race, sibling dynamics, adoption, grief, foster care, and addiction. The show addresses mature issues, but overall is PG.
Shows On my “To Watch” List:
- Little Fires Everywhere
- Normal People
Both of these shows are based on books that I have read recently. I look forward to seeing how Hulu has adapted them for the screen.
